All About Our Wonderful Paraprofessionals
Our well-prepared paraprofessionals make an enormous difference in the efficiency of our classrooms and the smooth daily operation of CJ Harris. These important staff members work closely with an assigned set of teachers and provide support to the teachers and students. Within the classroom, the paraprofessional may work with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of materials or skills introduced by the teacher. Daily responsibilities include supervising students in classrooms, hallways, the cafeteria, gym, and during arrival/dismissal times. Other duties and responsibilities may include the following:
- Distribute teaching materials such as textbooks, workbooks, papers, and pencils to students
- Use computers, audio-visual aids, and other equipment and materials
- Type, file, and duplicate materials
- Tutor and assist children individually or in small groups to help them master assignments and to reinforce learning concepts presented by teachers
- Provide extra assistance to students with special needs, such as non-English-speaking students or those with physical or cognitive disabilities
- Prepare lesson materials, bulletin board displays, exhibits, equipment, and demonstrations
- Observe students' performance, and record relevant data to assess progress
- Instruct and monitor students in the use and care of equipment and materials
- Organize and supervise games and other recreational activities to promote physical, mental, and social development
- Plan, prepare, and develop various teaching aids such as bibliographies, charts, and graphs
- Carry out therapeutic regimens such as behavior modification and personal development programs, under the supervision of special education instructors, psychologists, or speech-language pathologists
- Assist in bus loading and unloading
- Participate in teacher-parent conferences regarding students' progress
- Maintain computers in classrooms and laboratories and assist students with hardware and software use
- Assist in school library
- Provide students with assistive devices, supportive technology, and assistance accessing facilities such as restrooms
- Assist in supervising students throughout the school day, both inside and outside the campus
- Assist in maintaining a neat and orderly classroom
- Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events
- Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and state and local board policy
